One example is our relationship with Woven Farewell, an independent maker of handwoven willow coffins in Devon.
Their coffins are handcrafted using sustainably grown willow sourced from Somerset growers. Willow is a naturally renewable material that is harvested through a traditional coppicing process, allowing it to regenerate year after year. As a result, it has a significantly lower environmental impact than many conventional coffin materials.
Each coffin is made using biodegradable materials throughout, including natural willow, hemp rope handles and biodegradable linings. The willow itself is considered a carbon-negative crop, absorbing more carbon dioxide during its growth than is produced during cultivation and processing. In addition, Woven Farewell donates a portion of every coffin sale to woodland conservation projects, helping to support the natural environment for future generations.
For many families, there is something particularly fitting about choosing a coffin made from a renewable material grown and crafted here in the West Country.
